Orthokeratology - Seeing Without Contacts or Glasses

By Gordon Kaye

Orthokeratology

When most of us think of vision correction, three options come to mind.

1) Eyeglasses
2) Contact Lenses
3) Refractive Surgery (such as Lasik)

Many of us have never even heard of using orthokeratology as a means of correcting vision. But the truth is it works, it is safer than surgery, and easier than contact lenses or eyeglasses.

OrthoK is a method of correcting vision by wearing a retainer lens while you sleep. This lens actually re-shapes the cornea to allow you to see clearly. When you wake up, simply remove the lenses and your corneas have been temporarily re-shapen to give you clear vision.

The lenses used are a specifically designed gas permeable style of contact lens. Just like you would wear a night-guard for you teeth, the retainer lenses are put on right before bed and removed first thing in the morning.

The cornea is extremely flexible and will re-shape based upon the fitting of the OrthoK lens. As the days go on, your cornea will slowly reconfigure itself to its original shape. Most people wear OrthoK lenses every other night or 4-5 nights a week and experience great vision.

Consider Orthokeratology as a fourth option if you are nearsighted and currently wear glasses or contact lenses. The benefit if you will not have to deal with vision correction during your waking hours.

No more fussing with dirty eyeglass lenses or twisted frames. No more late day dry eyes from contact lenses. Just clean and clear vision.

I mentioned it is safer than Lasik because it is completely non-invasive and reversible. Lasik a life altering surgery with potential complications. If for some reason OrthoK did not work for you, just stop wearing the lenses and go back to regular contacts or eyeglasses. Simple!

So if this procedure sounds interesting to you, ask your eye care provider if it would work for your vision.
