Total Immersion Swimming - A Beginners review

By Gordon Kaye

I am 3 lessons in to a 5 lesson package to learn total immersion swimming and wanted to give everyone who is interested in transforming their swimming a review.

I have been able to swim for as long as I can remember. About 3 years ago I began training and competing in triathlons (swim - bike - run events). The swim was always a leg I could finish, yet I would get out of the water and feel tired and a bit dazed.

Many triathlon books and coaches promote a type of swimming called "Total Immersion" swimming so I found a local trainer and signed up for some lessons.

Lesson 1 was an hour long and started with an underwater video recording of my current swim stroke. We broke it down and found many areas for improvement. Then we went right to drills. The first drill was called skating and it was as easy as floating face down in the water. The main focus was to find proper body position for optimal floating.

Lesson 2 we built upon the first drill and added more body motion to it. Now we were gliding and rotating in the water.

Lesson 3 we added out of the water recovery by only lifting our elbows out of the water. Building slowly on this, we are now doing 90% full stroke swimming. The next focus is on breathing without losing rhythm.

At this point, I look at swimming entirely different than I did three weeks ago. Swimming used to be a boring workout of putting in laps after laps. Now each lap has a focus that I can use to improve my overall swim efficiency.

I now think of swimming laps more like yoga than any other endurance activity. Every move has an intention and the more focus I can have on an intention, while remaining relaxed, the less effort it takes to move through the water.

This morning I swam 1000 yards, broken out into 10 x 100's each with a different focus and the time just flew by. I got out of the water feeling energetic and relaxed.

While I am only 3 lessons in at this point I can fully recommend the total immersion swimming method to anybody who is looking to improve their freestyle swim stroke. Swim faster, swim further, with less effort.
