Triathlon Distances Explained

By Gordon Kaye

Triathlon is a fun and exciting sport that is growing in popularity each year. For the new triathlete the varying distances can be a bit confusing. This outline will clarify the main distances of triathlons.

Sprint Triathlons

The shortest distance available for a triathlon is called a sprint. Sprint triathlons are basically any event that is under an olympic distance triathlon. Sprints get there names because they are short enough to maintain a "sprint" pace throughout the entire race. A common sprint distance may be a 500m swim, 12 mile bike, and a 5K (3.1 mile) run. Sprints are great for beginners as you can learn the logistics of triathlon training and racing. Sprint triathlon distances can vary, but in general they are shortest of all triathlons.

Olympic Distance Triathlons

Olympic distance triathlons start with a 1500m (.93 mile) swim, followed by a 40K (24.8 mile) bike, and finishes with a 10K (6.2 mile) run.

Half Ironman (70.30

Next up is the Half Triathlon, also referred to as 70.3 and half Ironman triathlon. This has a 1.9Km (1.2 mile) swim, 90km (56 mile) bike, and 21.09km (13.1 mile) run. This distance got the nickname 70.3 because the total distance covered is 70.3 miles.

Ironman Triathlon

The Ironman triathlon, also referred to as long distance and full triathlons is 3.8km (2.4 mile) swim, 180km (112 mile) bike, and a 42.2km (26.2 mile) run. The run in an ironman triathlon is the same distance as a marathon.

Many triathletes like to vary the distances they race as they all offer a unique challenges. Sprint triathlons allow you to go fast with an all out effort. While the Ironman triathlon forces an athlete to focus on long term endurance.
